1996 Calypso King the "Hurricane"!

Twenty calypsonians from a field of 32 that competed in the Quarter-finals, made it to the semi-finals. The semi-finals saw two newcomers the Young Bull and the Black Starliner. And for the first time two female calypsonians sang with the men. They were Lady Edna, and Yakima. The other calypsonians for the semi-finals were Brakes, Spider, Ghost, Senator, Natty, Scrunter, Uncle Sly, Hunter, Checker, Man Himself, Educator, Liberator, Bassey, Intruder, Observer, Equaliser. Nine from the twenty met 1996 Calypso King the Hurricane at the Finals on Feburary 9th.

The theme for 1997 Carnival celebration was "Come Revel In Nature's Haven For Mass Dominik 97". Organizers here are continuing to promote the events in the Caribbean, the United States and elsewhere around the World, in an attempt to make Dominica's Carnival Big.

And much gratitude was expressed to the Carnival Sponsors by the Dominica Festivals Commission, DFC, here. Speaking at a press conference, Chairman of the DFC Sheridon Gregoire, said, the sponsors had responded very well and they need to be commended for their level of interest in Carnival activities. Mr. Gregoire thinks that the sponsors should be brought together by the DFC to ensure that sponsorship of the Carnival Queen Show is very well organised.

Alive Productions launched its Carnival Costume band "KALEIDOSCOPE OF COLOURS" on Sunday December 8th, 1996. The band featured five sections namely, Midnight Majic, Aqua Bliss, Reflections, Rainbow Fiesta and Jungle Queen. According to Marketing Manager of the band Athenia Henry, each section of the band depict an aspect which makes Dominica a unique Nature Island Paradise.
