Carnival 1997 in Dominica

On a rainy Saturday night Miss Giselle Francis Sponsored by Fun Sun Inc, was crowned Dominica's Carnival Queen 1997. In second place is Shannon Vigilante, sponsored by Telecommunications of Dominica. And in third place, Miss Donna Julian, sponsored by the Carnival Development Committe.

She is a radio personality employed at the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation, DBS Radio. A graduate of the Wesley High School and Clifton Dupigny College. 19-year-old Tarnia plans to pursue a career in Radio and Television; becoming a professional anchor woman and talk show host. She loves arts, and among her hobbies are singing, reading, writing and enjoys a twist of the adventurous - snorkelling. She grew up among horses, therefore, Tarnia loves horseback riding. She is also fund of travelling.
Judith, the beauty from the North of the island, says she has been there before so, "I am confident but I do not underestimate the other girls" said the 22-year-old Judith Romain from the village of Cottage. She was crowned Miss North in 1993. Better known as 'Babes' to many of her friends, Judith is a past student of the Portsmouth Secondary School, and enjoys reading and dancing. She said, she would very much like to be a role model for young people espically the young women from a village.

Loves jazz, cycling and painting and would like to pursue a career in quantity surveying, is Donna Julien of Goodwill. This 22-year-old graduate of the Community High School and the Clifton Dupigny Community College, believes her participation in this year's Carnival Queen Competition will boost herself confidence.
A graduate of the Dominica Grammar School and the Clifton Dupigny Community College, this five feet one hundred and fifteen pounds beautiful girl from the village of Fond St. Jean, has her mind set on obtaining a Masters Degree in French. Become an interior decorator and an architect is part of her dream together with going to the Year 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Her eye is also set on being the French Embassador for Dominica one day. An employee at the Dominica Community High School, as a French, Social Studies and Sports Teacher, Gisel sees Carnival as a time when all Dominicans should free-up, forget their problems and enjoy themselves.

This 19-year-old beauty from the village of La Paine, is a lover of nature, and hopes to contribute to the preservation of Dominica's natural resouces. A former student of the St. Martin's Secondary School, dreams of becoming a professional model. As her hobbies, she enjoys hiking, playing table tennis and singing. And is also a lover of Reggae, African and Jazz music.
18-year-old Samantha Scotland, is the 1996, Dominica's Female Calypso Queen, who is a lover of golden oldies and dancing, with a burning desire for a career which will allow her to help traumatised children. She is a former student of the Convent High school and the Sixth Form College. Her favourite subject was Principles of Business. Samantha is looking forward to becoming a psychotherapist, because she is concerned about abused children.

! These six beautiful young ladies will on February 8th, try to out do each other as they vie for the title of Miss Dominica Carnival Queen 1997, and to represent Dominica at such types of queen shows during 1997 and to be Dominica's Miss OECS contentant in 1998.
